The Movie Night That Made Me Finally Upgrade My Sofa

Have you ever hosted a spontaneous movie night for friends where half the group ends up on the floor because you didn't have enough space on the couch? Yep, been there, done that.

For the longest time, I had a 3-seater sofa. It was the right amount of cozy and was perfect for a quiet night in with my partner. I genuinely loved that couch.

The night it stopped working

But all good things usually come to an end. We were hosting our usual group for dinner. They'd sit on the couch, the dining chairs, and the folding chairs we'd pop out for occasions like this. Usually they'd head home after dessert. This particular night, nobody was in a rush to leave, and someone suggested we put on a movie.

Sitting on a dining chair through dinner is easy. Sitting on one through a two-hour film is a different story. We squeezed a few people onto the couch, but the rest were stuck choosing between the dining chairs and the floor. I spent half the film feeling a little guilty, watching people shift around trying to get comfortable and pretending they were fine. It wasn't the memorable night we'd hoped for.

What I changed

That's when I decided to upgrade to a 6-seater modular sofa. I can rearrange the pieces however I want, and it converts into a bed when the night runs long. The difference was immediate. Everyone had a spot. Nobody was on the floor. And our regular two-person movie nights got an upgrade too. It felt like sinking into a cozy cocoon of cushions and throw blankets.

What changed after

Hosting hasn't been the same since. In a good way. Nobody hovers near the kitchen pretending they don't want a seat, nobody calls dibs on the good spot, and nobody ends up on the floor. I should have done it years earlier.
